(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, August 22. A Lower Hutt take-away’ bar was ordered by the Industrial Court today to pay $125 in wages owing to a 14-year-old boy who was threatened with a “clip around the ear” when he left his job.
The Court heard from Clyde Sanderson that he was threatened with a “clip” from the manager of Streak Inn Takeaways, Lower Hutt, when he asked to leave his job two days before his notice was due to expire He said he was “sent on his way” and was never paid the four days wages due him. At the time he was working up to two hours a day at a rate of 70c an hour. the Court was being asked to make a wage arrears order against Streak Inn. But after studying the
New Zealand tea-rooms and restaurant employees’ award, the president of the Court (Judge R. D. Jamieson) decided that Clyde should not have been paid at a lower “youth rate”, and was entitled to full wages under the award. He awarded $125.56 in wages owing, and ordered Streak Inn to pay $25 for breach of the award. The Court heard that Clyde worked at the takeaway bar for two months last year as a kitchen hand. The shop was not represented at the hearing.
