Hut-occupancy conditions
Conditions for the occupancy of houses at the mouth of the Selwyn River, on land administered by the Springston South Domain Board were discussed at the quarterly meeting of the board in Christchurch.
The owner of one of the huts said in a letter to the board that he had been under the impression that the 90-day period when houses and huts were to be vacant was cumulative.
The board had already informed the owner by letter that the period is to be of successive days, and that permanent residency is allowed only after seven years of part-time residency. “We do not want this area to become another Stewarts Gully,” one Board member said. Damage in the recent storm was mostly to trees. One count put the number brought down at more than 80. The board approved the purchase of a large chainsaw for clearing work, and decided to move those that fell on to adjacent private land first. The budget for the year to March 31, 1976, prepared before the storm, left a surplus of $4OOO, but clearing work was estimated to re quire at least $lOOO
