COSTLY BOOKS
Magazine subscriptions, and books bought through Publishers’ Placers Australasia, Ltd, can cost considerably more than if bought through normal channels, the Consumers’ Institute has warned.
"Some people have paid 150 per cent more for magazines ordered through this company than they would if they had ordered them through a normal retail outlet.” the director of the institute (Mr R. J. Smithies) said.
One recipe book, “La Cuisine,” by Robert Oliver. cost $31.90 from Publishers’ Placers, and $16.10 at bookstores. “We are particularly concerned that this firm appears to have no stable address, and we have been unable to get in touch with them,” Mr Smithies said. The firm has done business in Auckland, Dunedin, and Blenheim. Publishers’ Placers is holding a national sales campaign, aimed at employees of business firms. They are asked to help the salesman to get points in a competition by* .buying books or magazine subscriptions. “This is essentially the same sales technique as that used in 1972 by another door-to-door magazine sales firm, International Circulation Builders, Ltd,” Mr Smithies said. In that case, the company stopped trading in New Zealand after a relatively short time, leaving many dissatisfied customers, he said.
