Cruelty to cat costs $155
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. James Haa Manuka placed a three-month-old kitten on his kitchen table, and proceeded to cut off its tail, the police told the Wellington Magistrate’s Court. Manuka, aged 22, a machinist, pleaded "guilty to a charge of being cruel to a cat under section three of the Animals’ Protection Act 1960, when he appeared before Mr D. J. Sullivan, S.M.
Sergeant A. J. A. Hamill said that about 10.30 p.m. on March 26, Manuka returned to his home after he had been drinking in a hotel. A dispute developed between Manuka and his de facto wife, and the defendant became angry, Sergeant Hamill said. Manuka then took his three month old kitten, placed it on the kitchen table, and hacked its tail off about three inches from the base. The kitten lost about six inches of tail. Manuka, was fined $l5O, and $5 costs.
