P.M. GLAD FAST FINISHED
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 8. The Prime Minister (Mr Rowling) today welcomed the decision of Mr Bruce Dyer to cease his fast in protest against the situation in India. Mr Rowling said that the fast had drawn a good deal of public attention to the recent curtailment of freedom in India. “I am sure I am expressing the view of the majority of New Zealanders when I say that it is the hope of the Government that the present emergency measures will soon be lifted. “The New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi reported again to me yesterday on the situation in India which we regard with continuing concern. “The views of the New Zealand Government are already known to the Indian Government, but 1 would not hesitate to reinforce these if, on the basis of further reports, the situation required it,” Mr Rowling said.
