Student is alive, well
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) STANFORD (California). Mr Stephen Smith, a Sanford University research , assistant held captive by i rebels in eastern Zaire since | May 19, has been released unharmed, university I officials have reported. Mr Bob Beyers, director of information for Stanford, said that Mr Smith, aged 22. was brought across Lake i Tanganyika into Tanzania. Mr Beyers said that ■officials in Tanzania had notified him by telephone that Mr Smith was “fine, entirely well, and very happy !to be reunited with his father.” Mr Smith was kidnapped along with three other Stanford students—Misses Barbara Smuts and Carrie Hunter, both of the United States, and Mr Emile Bergmann, of Bught, the Netherlands.
