Holmdale laying-over

Shipping News
The term “laying-1 over” is not familiar,] but it applies occasionally to vessels under charter awaiting cargo.
The 911-ton motor vessel Holmdale, fully manned, in commission, is laying over alongside in the inner harbour at Lyttelton awaiting cargo! for the Chatham Islands. She 1 is neither “laid up,” “stuck up.” nor “keeling over.” But she is idle, and will begin loading local Chathams cargo' when it builds up sufficiently, to enable departure on July 4. The Deputy Mayor of Christchurch (Mr P. J. R. Skellerup) last April described the Chathams as ‘forgotten islands.” He has not been the only one to do so— ' it has been going on as long I as the writer can recall.: Christchurch merchants have been vociferous at times, too. Under Government (“taxpavers”) charter, the Holmdale will now be sure of catering for the needs of Chatham Islanders. It would b” a brave political candidate who tried to make a “political football” out of the Chatham Islands this election year. The writer recalls vividly the battle waged bv the late Mr H L. Herdman, fonnerlv the Holm Shinning Company’s Lvttelton-based manager, to keep the Chathams well served. Both he and Cantain J. F. Holm, the
company’s managing-director,, were, in the writer’s opinion, ] magnificent in their efforts! for many years. Their patience was sorely tried. To- ! day. the Union Company is ' the owner. Chatham Islanders have not yet received many of the i “blessings” which we in New Zealand proper have. Yet three have been times when shippers, politicians, and! others have grizzled about; this service. It is a good ser- i vice, from the viewpoint of i apy experienced maritime I eye-witness. In addition to i the normal hardware, live-; I stock, fuel oil. foodstuffs, andi ; so on, let us cite minor items, ] ] shipped from Lyttelton, twice ] last December. On the first December; (Christmas) trip, there were' 21,000 bottles of beer. On the] ! second December trip, there ] were another 21.000 bottles! (New Year). There were 'spirits, too, but all this was] an infinitesimal part of the.' general cargo. In April last, when Mr Skellerup dubbed the Chat- : hams the “forgotten islands.” another 17.000 bottles of beer, among other cargo, were ■; shipped from Lyttelton. At present, the build-up of ’ ■ cargo is not complete, and i
so loading cannot begin. At; the moment, barely 9000 bottles of beer have been booked for shipment. It is significant, and even analagous, that the good people of Tristan De Cunha, after the cessation of its volcanic eruptions, were happy ! to return to their South Atlantic island. Pitcairn Island-1 ers have never expressed a wish to live in Rangiora,; either. ARRIVALS Rangatira (6.35 a.m.). 9387, ! Capt. R. E. Pugh-Williams, Welllington t U.S.S.i. Hawea (6.54 a.m.), 2926.
