Riccarton candidate
Mrs Beverley Hughes, aged 27, a tutor in nursing at the Christchurch Technical Institute, has been selected as the Values Party candidate for Riccarton for the 1975 General Election.
Her selection was announced at a public meeting in Riccarton last evening. Secretary of the Papanui branch of the party, Mrs Hughes is standing because she feels that in order to be effective, women have to work with men, rather than' compete against them. “I am totally opposed to any suggestion that women are separate,” she said. “Women are people, and members of society, as are men. I feel we should equalise society and remove any discrimination against women. Politics in New Zealand are very traditional, and do not suit New Zealand’s needs. There must be equality, and people must work together.’’ - Mrs Hughes, who joined the party about 16 months ago, was born in Christchurch, educated at Christchurch Girls’ High School, and trained in the city as a nurse, later teaching at the School of Nursing in Wellington. Her main interests are health and education.
