No power curb if smog bad
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, ■June 24. 1 Christchurch will be permitted to exceed electricity guidelines any time that smog threatens health. This was announced today by the Minister of Electricity (Mr Bailey) and the Minister of Health (Mr McGuigan). Mr Bailey said it was realised that Christchurch, with its many open fires, faced very real problems during i the winter. For that reason | the Government would recogmise Christchurch as “a special case” during its energy 'conservation programme. The Government’s energy conservation programme was aimed at saving overseas funds. However, should health be at stake, the Government would willingly forgo the saving, said Mr Bailey. Mr McGuigan said he re- , lied on the Christchurch City Council to inform the public when smog reached dangerous levels, and to advise the public to use alternative (heating facilities.
