Spedito wins Stradbroke

BRISBANE. The Brisbane trained Spedito, a cast-off from the big Smith stable in Sydney, scored a surprise win in tlie $61,000 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm in Brisbane on Saturday. The four-year-old, at 25 to 1, won by a short head from Smith’s entry. Skyjack, with Go Mod and Ima Shadow deadheating for third. Martindale, the favourite, was the best of the New Zealandbreds, finishing fifth in a blanket of horses al the line.
Smith trained Spedito as a i twoyear-old, but he was then ’sold to a group of Brisbane businessmen, who have had him trained by Jack Griffiths at ,(Eagle Farm. The New Zealand-breds, Participator and Dayana, improved their chances for today's $65,000 Brisbane Cup by running first and second in the $5OOO Winston Churchill Stakes (2200 m Participator. the favourite, beat Dayana by a nose, with the promising three-j ear-old, Like A Tiger, three lengths be hind.
