Wolfenden may reach century tonight

fthe Press” Special Service) AUCKLAND. Features of the opening night of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park tonight will be the bid by P. T. Wolfenden to achieve 100 driving successes for the season and a further round in the battle between C. S. Hunter and R. C. Purdon for the national trainers’ premiership.

Wolfenden has had a frustrating time lately but he looks to have a strong line-up of drives tonight and a great chance of becoming the first driver in New Zealand trotting history to reach the century mark. Hunter is away in the United States with Young Quinn but horses from his; stable are still competing in his name. With 67 wins he is three ahead of Purdon. But it will come as no surprise if Purdon closed the gap. He has a powerful team engaged and some of his best prospects will be handled by Wolfenden. Hill High and Classic Move, both members of Purdon’s stable, are fancied for the T.A.B. double races, and Tuteena, Framalda and Valiant Dream also appear to have fine chances in their respective races.

Hunter’s best hopes look to be Surete. Roval Waldorf and Kenwood Fair. Large areas of surface water at Alexandra Park had

virtually disappeared yester-l day afternoon and there is every prospect the track will! provide reasonable good* going tonight. Torrential rain. which ■ forced the postponment ofj racing on Saturday night,; caused extensive flooding in: the outside enclosure and: :made at least one of the car parks unusable. Water on the track drained off fairly quickly although . there were several bad patches. Withdrawals for the Thames Club’s meeting on ’Wednesday night were to have closed after the last race on Saturday. They will now be taken after the last race tonight. Handicaps will be declared immediately j following the last race. Selections:—
