Positive talks have been held in Port Moresby on the possibility of Papua New Guinea joining the International Copper Producers Association (Cipec) after it becomes independent according to the Cipec chairman, Mr A. Soku. Mr Soku, who is also the Zambian Minister for Mines and Energy, said last night that Papua New Guinea could gain a lot by joining Cipec. The four countries who make up Cipec accounted for 35 per cent of the world’s total copper production and 60 per cent of exports. They are Peru, Chile, Zambia and Zaire. Mr Soku said that Cipec’s purpose was to protect the interests of copper producers and consumers.
