Attention to Kawerau
fN.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 14. The Minister of Labour (Mr Faulkner) plans to make frequent visits to Kawerau to ensure that the new industrial peace on the newsprint machine construction project continues.
The visits will back up the appointment of his personal "troubleshooter” on the project—a Labour Department official (Mr B. Roderick). Mr Faulkner said he planned to walk around the site, talk to the workers and emphasise the Government’s determination to get the plant completed by September 30.
The new plant must be working then to save export contracts to Australia worth millions of dollars. Mr Faulkner had a word of praise for the work-force which has been heavily criticised for wildcat strikes. "There’s no complaint about their craftsmanship,” he said. "That plant will be a show place when it is finished.” 1
