Case for secession

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) PORT MORESBY. June 15.

The rebel Bougainville Provincial Assembly will next month send two delegates to Canberra and New York to explain its case for secession from Papua New Guinea to the Australian Government and the United Nations.

The Assembly spokesman, Mr Leo Hannett, told N.Z.P.A. from Bougainville today that the delegates would seek the help of both Australia and the United Nations.

“Our talks in Port Moresby last week have convinced us that secession is the only way for Bougainville,” he said.

Mr Hannett said over the next two weeks members of the Assembly which held two days of unsuccessful talks in Port Moresby to try to settle the dispute with the central Government would be touring the copper-rich Island.

“We have already met some of our traditional leaders since we have come back and they feel secession is a foregone conclusion.

“It is quite clear the central Government is not going to change its attitude towards Bougainville.”
