Young Quinn ’s big test

WASHINGTON. The New Zealand pacer. Young Quinn, the best pacer to come from Down I ndcr in a decade, faces his first big North American test at Yonkers Raceway, New York, tonight.
Young Qumn will try to match strides with seven other top free-for-all performers in the $lOO,OOO Yonkers International Pace Him.).
The field is the best that can be assembled in North
America at the moment and ;if Young Quinn can win he I will stamp himself as a | “star.” The International, first of a series of three big races at Yonkers in the next few* weeks with total stakes of' $225,000. is the twelfth such' event at Yonkers. It was staged all through the sixties but was dropped in 1972 for lack of high-class;, foreign competition. Yonkers revived the Inter- • national this year, when Young Quinn, the most prominent New Zealand; pacer since Cardigan Bay. I accepted an invitation .to run. ; Young Quinn was beaten j over a mile at Yonkers last I Saturday night, losing to champion filly. Tarpon Hap. • but was in front a stride past the post and his finish impressed critics. Young Quinn’s trainerdriver. Charlie Hunter J expects the horse to go well' in the International, even against the best that North America can produce. He will shoe Young Quinn in American plates to give him a better grip of the track and is making several minor changes to equipment in an effort to improve the horse’s performance.
Game Lad and Hocquardl will also run for New Zealand although they are both now owned by Americans. ;
Game Lad is at good odds 1 and Hocquard, a trotter-tumed-pacer. is one of the' long-shots. A win by either would be a surprise. Th - ’ $lOO,OOO purse will be' split — $50,000 for the winner. $25,000 for second. ■*12.000 for third. SBOOO for fourth and $5OOO for fifth.
