Record loss recalled

“Disappointed but not disheartened,” is the phrase employed by the manager of the Scottish Rugby team (Mr G. Burrell) whenever his side is beaten.

It is an expression full of significance, for the Scots' losses in New Zealand are nothing compared with that suffered by the national side when Mr Burrell made his last international appearance. He was full-back for the 1951 Scottish team which was crushed, 44-0, by South Africa at Murrayfield. This remains the record loss in international Rugby history.

"And the reason we got nil was because there is no lower score," Mr Burrell said.
