Food prices rose 1.4 per cent in May.
The food group index of the Consumers Price Index for May rose 15 points to 1084, an increase of 1,4 per cent, said the Government Statistician (Mr E. A. Harris) today. The main price rises during May — and their contributions to the rise in the all-food group index — were in seasonal fruit and vegetables, 5| points; processed fruit, sheepmeats, I; cake, 1; beverages, 1; sugar, 3; soft
drinks, etc., 1J; sweets, etc., 11; meals and takeaways, |.
Price falls in beef items provided a downward contribution of J point to the over-all movement in the all-food index.
The latest rise in the index continued the pattern which had persisted under the Labour Government, said the Opposition spokesman on trade and industry, Mr L. R. AdamsSchneider (Waikato) today. The rises for April and i May amounted to 3.3 per 1 cent — which would be more than 20 per cent as I an annual figure.
