This diesel locomotive was derailed in the Christchurch shunting yards about 10.15 a.m. yesterday when it was struck by waggons being pushed by another locomotive.
The Railways goods manager for Christchurch (Mr G. W. Clausen) said the locomotive which was derailed was pushing five waggons down to the gasworks, and on a parallel track a second shunting engine was pushing 40 or 50 waggons in the same direction.
Where the two lines converged, the waggons in the larger train hit the locomotive, derailing it and the first of its waggons. The impact also broke a rail.
“Unfortunately the shunting engine with the 40 or 50 waggons had pushed too far,” said Mr Clausen.
