Smoke levels in Chch high
Particularly high smoke levels — caused mainly by open fires and a lack of wind —■ were recorded in central Christchurch and Linwood in the 24 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday.
According to the figures ! released by the Department of Health the level in the inner city was 137 micrograms of smoke per cubic metre.' while in Linwood it was 329.
The peak two-hourly smoke reading during the 24ihour period — 8 p.m. to • 11 Op .m. —on Thursday was (496 in the central city and ’1442 in Linwood.
According to the World Health Organisation morej than 120 for a 24-hour smoke reading is “high” as is anything over 500 for a twohour maximum reading. A spokesman for the de-j partment explained that Lin- ; wood was a completely resi-f dential area and that from 121
