The gripes
(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright)
LONDON, June 9. Gripe water, the age-old remedy for burping babies, contains twice as much alcohol as the average beer, according to British experts. It may, they say, be turning people on to alcohol when they are still in the cradle.
The Avon Council on Alcoholism says in a report that this was recently discovered when a 42-year-old mother who did not drink and belonged to a temperance movement started showing signs of alcoholism.
It was found that she had taken her child’s gripe water to cure indigestion and built up her consumption until she was drinking between four and six bottles a day.
