No passengers on top

staW’ ST •■■RY

This curious carriage with the spherical container shown on this stamp of Denmark, was one of a pair issued in April, 1951. to mark the centenary of the first Danish stamp issue. Unlike other mail coaches, which normally carried passengers (both inside and on top) as well

as the mails, this oddshaped vehicle was intended solely for postal traffic, the letters being

safely stowed away inside the ball. What is more, the sphere was a device introduced deliberately to ensure that passengers could not be carried. Anyone who attempted to perch on top of the ball would certainly have had a most precarious and perilous ride. And, just to make the prospect still less inviting, the hall was fitted with iron spikes ! The purpose was to prevent the driver from developing a profitable and unofficial sideline by carrying passengers, and thus, it was feared, delaying the mails.
