Dr R. H. T. Bates was appointed yesterday to a new personal chair in electrical engineering at the University of Canterbury. The third professor of electrical engineering at the university, Professor Bates has been a reader in electrical engineering since 1969. Born and educated in Britain, Professor Bates worked in industry and in radar and communications in Britain, Canada, and the United States before joining the staff of the electrical engineering department of the university in 1967 as a senior lecturer. Professor Bates has been responsible for major research projects in medical engineering, radio engineering, and image processing, and was founding editor of the “Canterbury Engineering Journal.’ ’
