I Junko Tabei, the first (woman to conquer Everest, :is a leader of “housewives’ 'liberation” who earned the money for her attempt on (the world’s highest peak by (giving piano lessons. The sft 921 b Mrs Tabei, who on Friday braved bad weather and injuries suffered, in an avalanche to scale the mountain, is an avid climber who five years ago reached the summit of Annapurna 11. Her 14 team-mates on the all-woman Japanese expedition describe her as “a leader of housewives lib.” But to her husband. 33-year-old Masanobu Tabei, Mrs Tabei, the mother of a, three-year-old girl, is a i “modest housewife.”
Jubilant yesterday at the news of his wife’s historymaking achievement. Mr Tabei said, “She has now made a 50 per cent success but she has to come down a long way.”
