New Saigon Govt seizes islands
(New Zealand Press Association —Copyright) TOKYO. The Communist Government of South Vietnam had seized six islands in the South China Sea’s Spratly archipelago from the defeated Saigon forces, Hanoi’s Vietnam News Agency reported.
The six islands identified as Song Tu Tay, Son Ca, Nam Yet, Sinh Ton, Truong Sa and An Bang, were taken between April 14 and 29, by "the Liberation Navy from puppet occupation.” ; The archipelagoes, known! in Chinese as the Nanshas,; have been claimed by China,; The Philippines, the former! Saigon regime, Taiwan and
Malaysia. Recent oil finds have highlighted international interest in the islands and the former South Vietnamese Govern-; ment had granted drilling rights to several American firms. The French also have a residual claim and Singapore more than passing interest.
