(N.Z. Press Assn —Copyright) MELBOURNE, May 13. An American woman psychiatrist has suggested in Melbourne that women’s liberation has led to an increase in lesbian experiences among American college students. Doctor Zira Defries, an assistant professor .n psychiatry at Columbia University, says that many women feel that lesbianism is part of the movement towards women’s liberation, and part of being a whole woman.
“One-third of girl students! now at college in the United States have had lesbian ex-i jperiences, whereas 10 years ago the figure was about 21 mer cent.” she said, “and it' is estimated that 6 to 12 per [cent of that third will remain 'committed to lesbianism.”
Doctor Defries was speaking at the first Pacific Congress of Psychiatry.
