Saving power
Sir, — I wish to congratulate Rod Donald on his revelation of yet another example of Government ambivalence. How can Mr Freer possibly justify in one breath an expensive campaign to encourage New Zealanders to save all energy forms, and in another welcome the wholesale export of Mount Davey coal, a potentially large energy source, to Japan? New Zealand can hardly be expected to achieve a greater degree of self-sufficiency without the natural resources by which this goal can be sustained. We have little enough coal as it is, particularly of the quality and type to be found at Mount Davey, without attempting to supply the seemingly unquenchable thirst of our North Pacific trading partner. Let us be resolute, and make a stand against exporting valuable non-renewable resources, at least until the present world political, economic and energy crisis ends. — Yours etc., JONATHAN BOSTON.
