Waiau River
Sir, — Your headline "Farmers support Waiau Plains irrigation” is not quite correct. Golf clubs, saleyards, and other occupiers of 10-acre sections can
scarcely be called farmers. These people with no capital outlay got the same vote as farmers with $lOO,OOO development. The Amuri County Council is right behind the scheme and is poised to take over Cheviot County if the ditch goes through. The Ministry of Works wants the work for its staff and huge earth-moving machines. The Rural Bank seems to have accumulated finance to see that r armers never get free of Hereford Street. The Government wants the scheme to provide more meat which it cannot profitably sell now. We have been conned into voting for a ditch. We do not know where it is going or what it is finally going to cost, and some farmers will never get their heads above the water. — Yours etc., DRY AMURI. May 12, 1975.
