Clearance of cargo
I (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, April 11. A scheme providing for the speedier clearance of cargo shipped between Lyttelton and Melbourne is tobe extended to some other Tasman ports, the Minister; [of Customs (Mr Douglas); said today. 1 The pilot scheme, which has been operating since last; November, will be expanded! Ito service the ports of Auck-; Hand, Wellington, and Syd-| j ney from May 1, and will continue to cover only those! goods carried on roll-on, vessels. “Evaluation of the trial, venture by Australian and! New Zealand Customs de- : partments has shown that' the main objectives of easing the flow of goods, alle-i I viation of cargo congestion; at ports, and the avoidance' |of demurrage charges, cani be achieved,” the Minister; I said. j “Although it was neces-
sary for my predecessor, Mr Connelly, to chide Christ-, church importers and exporters for their early! lack of interest in thescheme, much greater sup-, port has since been forth-1 coming.”
