Injuries hit league
A spate of injuries has hindered the preparation of the Canterbury Rugby league squad for its match against Wellington at the Show Grounds next Saturday. However, the only certain withdrawal from contention for the final XIII has been the young Christchurch-East-ern Suburbs centre, Dean Harris — for personal reasons.
But it is quite likely that Harris’s centre partner for Eastern, Bruce Dickison, will also not be available. He injured a leg in a club game on Wednesday evening. The other casualties are Mutu Stone (thigh injury), and two internationals who are both troubled by ankle problems, John Greengrass and Mocky Brereton. The main cause of the mishaps has been the very firm playing fields early in the season.
Mr J. G. Clarke, the Canterbury coach, said that Brereton had been able to train last Thursday evening — the first time since Easter week-end. If there were any other defections, Mr Clarke said that he was confident adequate replacements would be found.
Table tennis.—Mr A. K. Harding (Lower Hutt) has been reelected chairman of the New Zealand Table Tennis Association’s executive committee.
Indoor bowls.—With entries now closed for the 1973 national indoor bowls championship at Nelson from June 7 to 14. there will be 1950 in the singles. 1110 In the pairs, and 545 in the fours.
