Many offers of help
“The Press” received a dozen te'ephone calls yesterday from people wanting to assist a young English couple stranded in Christchurch without their personal effects. The report yesterday about the plight of Mr and Mrs .1. M. Connolly of Lindsay Street who arc expecting their first child in June prompted offers of assistance from other migrants and the Red Cross.
The Red Cross indicated that it would supply the couple with the necessary clothing for the baby until the Connollys’ own supply arrived from Britain.
The couple came here last February expecting all their personal effects, including a full kit of equipment for a baby, to arrive soon after.
Nothing has yet arrived and the couple have no knowledge of the whereabouts of their luggage. The assistant manager of Brambles International (Christchurch), Ltd (Mr R.
G. Brittenden) said his company had sent an urgent telex message to Britain to the forwarding company handling the Connollys’ goods. “We have asked for details of the exact shipping position and the location of the goods,” he said.
Mr Brittenden said while his firm regretted the position the Connollys were in, it could not overcome any delays caused by a dock strike in Britain. Nor could the firm at the other end. The best news for the Connollys came from Captain R. M. Henshaw of the
Blue Star Port Lines who confirmed that the dock strike at Tilbury was over and containers through that port should be on their way to New Zealand. He said it was over to the forwarding agents to get the containers with the Connollys’ goods inside on a ship as soon as possible.
