Assault in Thailand

Communist insurgents using ! rockets and automatic wealpons have launched a heavy I assault against Government forces in a northern province of Thailand. The Minister of Defence (Mr Praman Adireksarn) said today that 16 Thai soldiers had been killed and 20 others wounded in fighting yesterday between 200 guerrillas and a cavalry division in the Thung Chang district of the province of Nan, which borders Laos, and that fighting was continuing today. The insurgents are believed to be hill-tribe soldiers supported by the estimated: 50,000 North Vietnamese’ forces stationed along the Thai-Laotian border.

Nan is one of 30 provinces in which the Thai Govern[ment has declared martial law because of increased activity by Communist guerrillas. There are between 7000 to 10.000 militant Communist insurgents in Thailand.
