Sharp rise in relief work
(N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The number of unemployed registered with the Labour Department fell 13 to 3058. between March 14 and March 27, said the Minister of Labour (Mr Faulkner). As well, 617 people (366 at March 14) were employed on work with Government departments and hospital boards. Vacancies recorded by the department fell 63 to 2463. The 2021 vacancies for males included 983 for skilled men. Those receiving unemployment benefit increased 87 to 1632. District figures (March 14 totals in parenthesis) were: Northland, 416 (461); Auckland, 792 (773); Hamilton 289 (262); Tauranga, 186 (224): Rotorua. 197 ’204); Gisborne, 194 (193): Napier. 25 ' 241. Hastings. 29 (14); New Plymouth, 85 (501: Wanganui. 59 (73): Palmerston North. 292 ( 305): Masterton 12 <9); Lower Hutt. 39 <631; Wellington. 44 (47): Blenheim. 67 (65): Nelson. 13 (1.4); Grevmouth 21 (23): Christchurch. 150 (116); Timaru. 29 (16); Dunedin-Oamaru, 58 (64): Invercargill. <" (66).
