Ultimatum to seamen

<_VZ. Press WELLINGTON. April 10.

Auckland members of the Seamen's Linion will be deregistered if the island trader Karepo is not manned tomorrow morning.

This ultimatum was given tonight by the Minister of Transport and Acting Minister of Labour (Sir Basil Arthur). Sir Basil said that Auckland members of the union must man the Karepo when a crew was called tomorrow morning and sail the vessel when requested by the Minister. If they failed to do this they would be deregistered.

In a brief statement. Sir Basil said: “The Government is emphatic that it will tolerate no longer seamen’s continued refusal to take the ship to sea." The Karepo has been strike-bound i n Auckland now for almost three weeks, during which time seamen have defied two rulings from the shipping tribunal, and refused to put forward a crew despite instructions from the national union. Officers of the union are facing charges of defying the tribunal, brought under the Shipping and Seamen Act.
