No smoke and no ire

Few events have been held in the Town Hall Limes Room in such a clear atmosphere as occurred last evening. Although almost 200 people were in the room, drinking, chatting, and nibbling on savouries, there was not a cigarette in sight. It was not a meeting of Chain-smokers Anonymous, but the reception for the Prime Minister of Singapore (Mr Lee Kuan Yew).

Each of the guests was given on arrival a smalt slip of paper bearing the Christchurch City Council crest and the request:

“As a courtesy to our distinguished guest, who has a special dislike of cigarette smoke, invited guests are respectfully invited to refrain from smoking on this occasion.”

They did to a man, and with good grace, although the rapidity with which cigarettes appeared in most groups minutes after Mr Lee left an hour and a half later suggested that some had felt it a strain.
