Batsmen put on "armour"
LONDON. At least two England test players are considering wearing speciallydeveloped protective head shields against the Australian fast bowlers this English summer. A sports designer and manufacturer. Mr Paul Suili- ! van, told television viewers ! that his company had developed chest guards, arm ! shields, and protectors for . the cheek and chin with the Australian tour in mind. I “I’m sure many county players will be using these guards this season.’’ Mr SulI livan said. “A least two test players have already said they will wear the head shields. The players are Tony Grieg and Chris Old." The England batsman, Colin Cowdrey, a guest on the programme, described some of the equipment as “hideous looking and too bulky.” The head shield is modelled on a cap, with a pad ded strap passing under the chin, and also provides protection for the cheekbones. The programme also screened an interview with Lillee, filmed in Perth last month. "If they fee] happier. I suppose it would be all right if they wore protective gear. But I really feel there's no need." he said.
