Qualifying exemptions
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) ST ANDREWS (Scotland). The Royal and Ancient Golf Club championship committee has announced a list of 18 overseas competitors who will be exempt from qualifying for this year's British Open championship at Carnoustie, Scotland, from July 7 to 12. Heading the list is Gary Player, of South Africa, the winner last year.
The others exempted are Jack Nicklaus (United States), Danny Edwards (United States). Lu Liang Huan (Taiwan), Donald Swaelens (Belgium), Bobby Cole (South Africa), Tom Weiskopf (United States), Lanny Wadkins (United States), Angel Gallardo (Spain), Kel Nagle (Australia), Arnold Palmer (United States), Lee Trevinc (United States), Billy Casper (United States), Jerry Heard (United States), Tom’Watson (United States), Leonard Thompson (United States). Rod Curl (United States) and Bob Gilder (United States). A notable omission from the list is Ben Crenshaw, th< 23-year-old Texan whe played in the Piccadilly world match-play tournamen at Wentworth, England, las’ year.
