Arthur’s Pass road

Sir, — “Tramper’s” observations would seem to be based on the result of an annual trip to this region because he obviously has no background infprmation concerning the different proposals for the future road through Arthur’s Pass. Has “Tramper” seen the present speedway, which goes through the village, in action? If so then he must agree that the by-pass is a must. The alternative to the present proposal, by the way; is the widening of the present road to make it a four lane highway with the resulting demolition of many baches, plus even more speeding. Where does the ecological and aesthetic disaster come in? I fail to see that an unused, much bulldozed riverbed, lined with power pylons could be ecologically disturbed by being tidied up through having a road on it, and more to the point, the thousands of school children now using the village as a base for education and recreation will not be "fatally” disturbed. — Yours, etc., RESIDENT.
