Cheaper to Australia than Chathams

It would cost more to fly f o the Chatham Islands, via Wellington, than to Australia. if the Government’s decision to cut the ChristchurchChathams air service was implemented, said the chairman of the Lyttelton electorate of the National Party (Mr R. A. Gormack) last evening. A return trip to Australia was $l4B. but it would cost $159 to fly to the Chathams via Wellington, which did not include two overnight stopovers at a Wellington hotel which would bring the cost closer to $3OO, Mr Gormack said. “I challenge the member of Parliament for Lyttelton (Mr T. M. McGuigan) to declare his position and explain to his constituents what action, if any, he took to represent their interests to retain the service,” said Mr Gormack. “The air service is the life line of the Chathams,” he said. “I cannot understand why the Christchurch link has been cut to save $3500 when the Wellington services loses almost $40,000.’’
