SQUASH MOVE DEFEATED

A proposed two-tiered system for playing club matches was defeated at the Canterbury Squash Rackets Association annual meeting.

If the proposal had been accepted, two lots of matches would have been played on the one court in the same night this season.

One speaker in favour of the motion was the delegate for the Suburbs club, Mr A. E. Dunlop, who said that his club could only make its courts available for one night. If the proposal was defeated the club would only be able to enter four teams instead of eight, he said. However, the meeting decided that clubs should know that teams should be entered on the basis of two teams per court provided by the club and it was purely up to the clubs to decide on the number of teams they entered.

All delegates favoured a switch from fortnightly games in some grades to weekly competition in all grades. Mr L. G. Milne (Sumner) was re-elected president of the association for a third term, while Messrs D. R. Preston and V. J. W. Hargreaves retained their

positions as vice-presidents after a ballot.

Mr Preston was re-elected although he is now living in Greymouth, which is still in the Christchurch district.

Umpires.—All players apart from those with recognised umpiring qualifications will have to attend at least one seminar on tile rules and umpiring generally before the season begins. Balls.—The white-spot ball will be used in all women’s interclub matches.

Levies.—Tlie junior levy was raised from 25c to 50c and a special levy of 50c for every senior player in the area will be imposed to help finance the New Zealand championships. Officers elected were: President. Mr L. G. Milne; vice-presidents, Messrs V. J. W. Hargreaves and D. R. Preston; secretary, Mr P. Steinmetz; treasurer, Mr I. W. Thomas; district coaching co-ordinator, Mr D. M. Lawrie; junior coordinator, Mr M. D. Grant; convenor of match committee. Mr J. G. Fouids; women’s representative, Mrs P. Leopold; referees’ co-ordinator, Mr P. A. Liken.
