Nine Maori trialists
Nine players have been nominated by the Canterbury Rugby League for consideration for the New Zealand Maori trials at Easter weekend. They are Gary Taie (Papanui), Robert Auimatagi (Sydenham), Jack Clarke (Kaiapoi), George Te Aho (Addington), Maurice Biddle (Sydenham), Tony Ratu (Addington), Ivan Reuben (Kaiapoi), Stewart Hogg (Sydenham), and Mutu Stone (Addington). Taie, Auimatagi — both centres—Clarke, Te Aho—at full-back—and the forwards, Hogg and Stone, represented Canterbury last season, and Ratu; a prop, had one match for the province in 1972. Reuben was a co-winner of the Canterbury “Sportsman of the Year” title two years ago, and Biddle has shown much promise in the Sydenham pack. The trials are to select a squad for the Pacific Cup tournament in Port Moresby in May. Eddie Kerrigan (Papanui was considered ineligible because of commitments for the Kiwi trials about the same time.
