Dump to be closed
The rubbish dump at Diamond Harbour will be closed within 30 days, the Lyttelton Borough Council decided. The borough engineer (Mr F. Davidson) said that the dump had been a matter of concern because in spite of notices saying that it was for garden refuse only, all sorts of rubbish was spread over the entire area. It included tins and food, creating ideal conditions for flies and rodents. He recommended that it be closed. Mr Davidson said that a major cleaning was undertaken in November. 1974. A bulldozer levelled the site and covered it with fill at a cost of $450. and the drainage was extended at a cost of $125.
“Within a month the area was as bad as ever because of bags of rubbish, plastic and paper containing objectionable refuse.” said Mr Davidson.
