Young performers give recital
A concert organised by the Christchurch School of Instrumental Music as part of the Arts Festival was given by young chamber-music players in the James Hay Theatre last evening.
It began with Ingrid van Roosmalen (violin), Kathleen di Goldi (cello), and Linley Exton (piano) giving a stylish and smooth performance of Mozart’s Allegro from the Trio in E major, K. 542. Sarah Taylor (clarinet), Maryke van Leuven (cello), and Angela Campbell (piano) played a theme from Beethoven’s Trio in B flat. Op. 11. with very good control and precision. There were pleasing tonal qualities and plenty of life in the performance. The Elegie from Arensky’s Trio in D was given by Katherine Walshe (violin), Bridget Underhill (cello), and Julia Coulson (piano). This was delicately atmospheric playing, occasionally needing a little more attention to the finer points of tuning. Jennifer Long (violin),
Faith Austin (viola), Judith Williams (cello), and Wendy Williams (piano) gave a shapely and expressive rendering of the Allegro from Faure’s Piano Quartet in C minor.
Catherine Donaldson (violin), Janet Porter (viola), and Catherine van Leuven (piano) produced some spirited playing and rich tone in the Allegro from Dvorak’s Trio in B flat.
The broadly sweeping music of Brahms’s Allegro from his Trio No. 5 in A minor was well brought to life by Catherine McCammon (clarinet), Margaret Cooke (cello) and Fay Nicol (piano). The Allegro ma non troppo from Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat major was played with animation and with expressive finesse by Martin Lamb (violin), Alastair Sands (violin), Vivien Higgs (viola), Jerome de Bouter (cello), and Fiona Steedman (piano). The whole concert was most enjoyable, and well presented. —C.F.B.
