Old trees fall

(■V.Z Press Association} NELSON, March 12. Two trees of historic interest fell during the gales associated with Cyclone Alison. The largest Turkey oak in the country, at Broadgreen, crashed down about 9 a.m. The oak, well over 65ft high with a spread of 100 ft, was planted in 1856 by Edmund Buxton.

A little later this morning an 82ft white elm, one of only two in New Zealand, was brought down in Anzac Park, Nelson.

U.S. honour.—Professor Sir William Liley. of the Auckland University PostGraduate School of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, has been made an honorary fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He is reported to be the first New Zealander to receive this honour.—(P.A.)
