Youth failed to return car

A youth who took a car fori -a test drive and did not return it to the dealer was convicted j on a charge of car conversion! when he appeared before Mr P.. L. Molineaux. S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. The youth, Lloyd William Roy I Reeves, aged 18, unemployed,’’ pleaded guilty. He was remanded ; on bail to March 19 for sentence. j Sergeant A. H. Huckstep said ( that about 4.30 p.m. on March 6 the defendant visited Riccarton Car Sales, Ltd, and showed interest in a car valued at $1295. He went for a test drive around the block but failed to return the car. He later arranged to take some persons to Dunedin but the car was found by the police at 8.30 p.m. The car had $5O worth of damage done to its body panels, said Sergeant Huckstep. The defendant was not interviewed until March 11. He said he had intended buying the car. OFFENCE WITH KNIFE A youth who injured a person in the arm when he threw a knife through a car window, was sentenced to juvenile periodic detention for six months and put on probation for one year on a charge of assault. The youth. William Arthur Dickson, aged 18, had earlier pleaded guilty. Mr K. N. Hampton, for Dickson. said that the knife was 1 thrown during an incident; between persons in two cars in the citv on March 8. In the incident some other; persons threw beer bottles and' drove off in a car. The defen-; dant was angry and threw the I knife at the retreating car. He; was 20ft from the car. The knife went through the! [open car window and injured a 1 man in the arm. That person was later discharged from; | hospital after the muscle in his f arm was sutured, said Mr Hamp-i ton. ATTEMPTED MURDER Alan Gordon Mackie, aged 22, of Dunedin, was remanded to March 27 for the taking of depositions on a charge of attempting to murder Aynslie Anne Mackie on December 25. He was remanded in the custody of Sunnyside Hospital. FAILED TO STOP A youth whose car rolled over in a chase after an accident,; pleaded guilty to three charges ! and was convicted and remanded on bail to March 19 for sentence, I He is Stephen Tarewai Apes, j aged 19, a labourer, who was | charged w’ith failing to stop after. an accident in Huxley Street on. Street and turned left into Huxley Street. During the turn his car collided with the right’ front of another car. The defendant did not stop after tke accident and the other car turned and followed him. As the other car came alongside I him and he was signalled to stop, he attempted to push the other! car off the road. TOOK CAR Leslie Allan Dwyer, aged 23, a boilermaker, wa’s fined $l5O and disqualified from driving for three months on a charge of unlawfully taking a car, valued at $l5O, on March 4. He pleaded guilty. A co-offender, Gary John Jamieson, aged 23, a welder, pleaded guilty to a similar charge and also to charges of stealing a rifle and ammunition from the car, and failing to report to the probation officer on October 11. He was remanded on bail to March 19 for sentence. Sergeant Huckstep said the two defendants took the car after leaving a hotel in Moorhouse Avenue about 10.15 p.m. They drove to Marshland Road and drank some beer. The defendant Jamieson then went home. At 1.15 a.m. Dwyer was in the car when the police stopped it. At 3.10 a.m. the police called on Jamieson and found the rifle and ammunition, taken from the car, under his bed. 10 DAYS GAOL On a charge of driving with an excessive blood-alcohol level (lllmg), Kevin Francis Slater, aged 22. a marine engineer, was sent to gaol for 10 days. He pleaded guilty. The Magistrate said that Slater had been convicted on a ' similar charge in 1970 and 1971 and on a charge of drunkenness , in 1971 and 1972. TWO OFFENCES John Edward Dixon, aged 19 (Mr A. W. Robinson), was fined $2O on a charge of incurring a (debt of $4.30 at a cafe by a false • pretence. He also had his term of probation extended four months on a charge of failing to report to I the probation officer. He (pleaded guilty to both charges. Mr Robinson said that when Dixon went outside the cafe to relieve himself he saw his friends 1 leave the cafe. He knew they had not paid for their meal but he had no money himself. In relation to the breach of i probation Mr Robinson said that i Dixon had gone to the probation < service four times and was given i an appointment each time to see , the probation officer.

WOUNDING CHARGE A man whose name was suppressed was remanded in custody to March 19 for the taking of depositions on a charge of wounding a woman on February 9. No plea was entered. SHOPLIFTING Marion Honatana, aged 20. a factory hand, was fined $4O on a charge of stealing goods worth $6.28 from Woolworths N.Z., Ltd, New Brighton, on December 21. She pleaded guilty. LITTER CHARGE A fine of $4O was imposed on Allan John Wiggins, aged 17, unemployed, when he was convicted on his plea of guilty on a charge that without reasonable excuse he left dangerous litter (a beer bottle) on Colombo Street, about 11.20 p.m. on December 12. Wiggins said that he was pushed from behind and dropped the beer bottle he was drinking from. It had smashed and he had kicked the glass into the gutter before leaving. CUE BROKEN Peter Gilbert Smith, aged 24, a lineman, was fined $2O and ordered to pay $3 compensation when he was convicted on his plea of guilty on a charge of wilfully damaging a pool cue, the property of the New City Hotel. Sergeant Huckstep said that about 10 p.m. on March 11 the defendant was playing poo] in the hotel. He left the room by one door with the cue and when he re-entered by another door the cue was broken in two. FINED $250 lan David Cresswell, aged 25, a stoker, was fined $250 and his licence was cancelled on a charge of driving with an excessive blood-alcohol concentration (314 mg on Lyttelton Street. Donald David Carstairs, aged 26, a driver, was sentenced to three months periodic detention and his licence was cancelled for one year for a second offence of driving with excessive bloodalcohol level (183 mg RECEIVING Barry Peter Sopp, aged 28. a driver (Mr P. G. Benseman), was convicted on a charge that on or about December 14 he received from Ross Evan Griffiths a car engine and transmission valued at $7OO.

Sopp, who pleaded not guilty, was remanded to March 19 for sentence. ! (Before Mr W. F. Brown, S.M.) CARELESS USE Clifford James Evans, aged 84, a retired hairdresser (Mr A. W. Hearn), was convicted, fined $2OO and disqualified from driving for six months when he was . convicted on a charge of carelessly using a motor-car. causing the death of Charles Ogston Barren on Riccarton Road on August 21. Evans pleaded not guilty to the charge. He said in evidence that the man, who was crossing Riccarton Road by the Euston Street intersection when the accident occurred, was not on the pedestrian crossing when hit by his car.

After hearing further evidence the Magistrate said he was satisfied that the collision had occurred while the pedestrian was on the crossing. However, he conceded that the accident was the result of a momentary lack of attention rather than a reckless element. ASSAULT

Maurice James Spence, aged 23, a clerk (Mr W. H. McMenamin), was fined $25 for assaulting Roger Allan Urlwin on October 26.

The defendant had pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Court was earlier told that the assault occurred on the University of Canterbury campus at Ilam.

Mr McMenamin submitted that the action was out of character for the defendant and that it was unlikely that he would offend again in such a manner. The Magistrate said he acknowledged that the situation was “a bit much” for the defendant. DRIVING CHARGE Anthony Arnold Hawkins, aged 24, a grass cutting contractor, was convicted ar.d remanded to March 19 for sentence when he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while disqualified on Waltham Road on January 4. The Magistrate ordered that the defendant be medically examined to determine his fitness for adult work centre training. However, it was unlikely that the defendant would be sent there, he said. It was almost inevitable that there would be a substantial period of imprisonment imposed. The defendant had a long list of convictions for driving while disqualified. BRAWL IN HOTEL

A mar. who assaulted the general manager of the Shirley Lodge Hotel after he was refused a drink at 12.10 a.m. on December 12, appeared, from his record, to be a pugnacious type, the Magistrate said. John Wayne Bishop, aged 21, a boilermaker (Mr R. J. Murfitt) pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting William Garth and wilfully damaging a glass door valued at $4B.

Previously the defendant denied the assault charge but after hearing the prosecution' evidence, changed his plea to guilty. The defendant had had quite a bit to drink at the time and was not quite sure what had gone on, Mr Murfitt submitted. The defendant was convicted on both charges and for assaulting Mr Garth he was fined $4O. He was ordered to pay compensation of $4B for the broken window. (Before Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M.)
