Coach seeks determination

An attitude of determination is one of the prime requisites in his players sought by Martin Stewart, New Brighton’s diminutive, 33 - year - old Scottish coach. Martin Stewart, a civil engineer by profession, is approaching his task at Brighton both philosophically and practically. He sees a lot of hard work ahead, but with the right attitude and understanding among his team he is optimistic for Brighton’s chances in the

National League this season. “If we work hard I think we should do quite well,” he ! said this He has only

been in the country a couple of months and is concentrating on strength in his first and second teams and its under-18 side to give the club continuity at the top level.

A single man, he has spent much of his life in football. He played as an amateur and a semi-profes-sional before an ankle ligament injury forced him to move entirely to the coaching side. He has spent the last 10 years coaching from youth football to the semiprofessional Central and Ayrshire League clubs Yoker Athletic in central Glasgow and Largs (his home town) and Dairy Thistles in Ayrshire. He was also a scout for two English clubs — Blackpool and Chelsea. New Brighton has appointed Andy Lower as its second team coach, and Joe Kemp is again the coach for its under 18 side. Mr Stewart said he was

“very happy” and was settling in very quickly. He said he came to New Zealand for experience and to see things from a different country. He believes very much in getting the best out of his players and team as a whole through talking and developing an understanding as well as by* hard work at training. With the right attitude and application Mr Stewart sees great opportunities and rewards for young New Zealand players. He wants to see youth play a greater role in National League football alongside the necessary experienced players. REWARDS “There are many more openings and rewards here

I- in New Zealand than in d many other countries for the g young player,” he said, “but

io e they’ll have to approach ' things right, apply themselves, be determined to succeed, and work hard. Anye way, that’s what I’ll be looke ing for.”
