Renault cuts work-time
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, March 11.
France’s leading car manufacturer, Renault, has responded to strikes in its factories by placing 6000 workers on half-time duty. Altogether, 25,000 of Renault’s 92,000 work-force are now affected by short-time working, and two factories — in Sandouville, near Le Havre, north-west France, and Flins. near Paris —are closed.
In the Le Mans factory, about 119 miles south-west of Paris, where the 6000 workers have been put on halftime, production has been halved in a fortnight by what the unions term “an enthusiasm strike.”
Workers have been disrupting factory organisation and preventing quality control by producing parts faster or slower than the time imposed. A management spokesman said that by hitting the workers’ pockets it was hoped the company could end stoppages which have cost the company between 5000 and 10,000 cars in one month.
