Bauer reaches half-way point
The Wellington long-distance runner, Siefried Bauer, reached the half-way point yesterday on the tenth day of his attempt to break the record from Bluff to Cape Reinga when he passed through Foxton about 2 p.m.
Bauer was running into driving rain and cold wind as he continued on towards Bulls late yesterday afternoon.
He planned to make an overnight stop at Bulls, after running about 69 miles since he left Paekakariki yesterday morning.
If he continues at his present rate, he is expected to break by about three days the record of 23) days set by the Christchurch runner, Don Cameron, last November.
Bauer is handicapped by no longer having a caravan to sleep in. The caravan which travelled with him through the South Island was left behind at Picton because of lack of funds.
Bauer is sponsored by the N.Z.8.C., and the Ministry of Recreation and Sport “Come Alive” campaign. A sponsorship of $250 from the N.Z.B.C. ran out in the South Island. A grant of $2OO from the “Come Alive” campaign is not expected to cover his expenses through the North Island.
Bauer is trying to obtain offers of sleeping quarters for himself and his attendants along the way to Cape Reinga.
