‘SINISTER CONNECTION’
Scotland Yard
investigation
(N.Z.P.A.Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, March 3. The “Sunday Telegraph” reports that Scotland Yard’s Special Branch is investigating “a sinister Russian connection” behind last week’s leakage of confidential documents about the Queen’s shareholdings to the Communist “Morning Star.” “The leak is one more in a series from the Civil Service recorded in a 150,000word file at Scotland Yard,” the “Sunday Telegraph” says. “The background to the new inquiry is a strong suspicion that the photocopied papers were obtained by the embassy of a Communist country in London from a subverted civil servant.
“The Whitehall leaks were first revealed four years ago. After newspaper disclosures, Scotland Yard found that confidential information was being systematically supplied from Government files to embassies in London and to commercial interests.”
The “Morning Star” recently published photocopies of Govemmment correspondence showing plans to exempt the Queen from a proposed law to empower companies to force shareholders to identify themselves.
