Kashmir’s new Chief Minister (Sheikh Abdullah) has told Pakistan to mind her own affairs and not express hollow sentiments for the welfare of the Kashmiris in India. The Sheikh told a crowd of 100,000 at a public meeting that Pakistan should grant basic rights to people in the part of Kashmir she occupied before talking about the Kashmiris’ right of self-determination. Earlier, the new Kashmir [leader had been cheered by huge crowds as he drove into Srinagar from the summer capital of Jammu for his first visit since he assumed power on Sunday of last week, ending a 22-yeai dispute with the Indian Government over autonomy for the State.

Sheikh Abdullah said that he could not understand why the Pakistan Prime Minister (Mr Bhutto) was angry about the accord he had signed with the Indian Prime Minister (Mrs Gandhi) last month. “Why should he react in this manner when all the Kashmiris are doing is trying to set their own house in order?” the Sheikh asked.
