Timor: Djakarta comment

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

DJAKARTA, March 3.

The semi-official Indonesian newspaper, “Suara Karya,” today called on Portugal to heed the warning by the Foreign Minister (Mr Adam Malik) that Indonesia would not tolerate Portuguese Timor becoming a trouble spot.

“Indonesia has no intention of meddling in other people's affairs, but when the colony is being deliberately turned into a trouble spot, as now, by a hate-Indonesia campaign. it is reasonable that Mr Malik issue a warning which Portugal should heed.” the newspaper said in a leading article. “Whatever is taking place in the eastern part of Timor is the full resnonsiblity of the Portuguese Government.” “Suara Karya” is the official organ of the ruling political alliance. Golkar, the chairman of which, MajorGeneral Amir Murtono. said last week that Indonesia should be on the alert “in the face of the present situation in Timor.”

The news agency, Antara. has reported that hundreds of political refugees have entered Indonesian territory in the western part of the island as a result of pressure by Communist elements in the Portuguese colony. Mr Malik said during the week-end that the situation in the colony was chaotic, and he gave a warning that Indonesia “would not tolerate that situation developing to a dangerous stage.”
